A Ultrasonographic Study of Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis

Abstract
This study was a ultrasonographic analysis of the 32 consecutive cases of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, who were surgically treated at the department of pediatric surgery of St. Francisco Hospital from October 1989 to November 1990.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The most prevalent age group between was the third week and sixth week and the ratio of male to female was 7.0:1.
2) In the preoerative ultrasonography, 30 cases or all patients were above 4.0 mm in thickness of the pyloric muscle(93.7%) and in operation 27 cases(84.4%) of all patients were above 4.0 mm in the thickness of the pyloric muscle.
3) In the preoperative ultrasonography, 24 cases(75.0%) of all patients were between 4.0 mm and 6.0 mm in the thickness of pyloric muscle, but in the postoperative 2 weekss, 5 cases(15.6%) were between 4.0 and 6.0 mm, 24 cases(75.0%) were below
4.0 m
and in the postoperative 4 weeks, 28 cases(87.5%) were below 4.0 mm.
4) In the preoperative ultrasonograpy, 21 cases(65.6%) of all patients were between 15.0 and 20.0 mm in the pyloric length, 7 cases(21.9%) were above 20.0 mm and in postoperative 2 weeks, 6 cases(18.7%) were below 10.0 mm, 16 cases(50.0%) were
between
10.0 and 15.0 mm. 10 cases(31.3%) were between 15.0 mm and 20.0 mm and above 20.0 mm were nil. Only 2 cases(6.3%) were above 15.0 mm in postoperative 4 weeks.
5) In the preoperative ultrasonography, 29 cases(90.7%) of all patients were between 10.0 mm and 20.0 mm in the pyloric diameter. In the postoperative 2 weeks, 15 cases(46.9%) were below 10.0 mm, 13 cases(40.6%) were between 10.0 and 15.0 mm,
and
in
the postoperative 4 weeks, 21 cases(65.6%) were below 10.0 mm.
6) In ultrasonographic follow-up of the hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, the most significant change is decrease of the pyloric depth.
7) After the discharge from the hospital, the patients were asymptomatic, and none of the patients readmitted due to recurrent symptoms.
